Summary:
Who will be Next?
Former FBI Special Agent Sloane Burbank has survived a life-threatening injury sustained in the line of duty, only to face leaving a job she loves in order to recuperate. As an independent consultant, she now uses her specialized skills to train law enforcement and private organizations in crisis resolution. But when one of her closest childhood friends mysteriously disappears, and the woman's devastated parents beg for her help, Sloane takes the case—even though her ex-lover Derek Parker is the FBI agent in charge.

Special Agent Derek Parker, now assigned to the Asian Criminal Enterprise Task Force in the FBI's New York Field Office, has no time to spare for a year-old case he sees as a dead end—especially since it would mean working with a woman he never expected to see again. He's pursuing the leader of a Chinese gang and trying to solve a series of grizzly murders in Chinatown, so he initially offers Sloane the case files and minimal cooperation.

But as more women disappear and others turn up brutally murdered, Derek's priorities shift, and he and Sloane come to the sickening realization that these random crimes are linked to the same crazed killer. No one can anticipate when he will strike again, but when Sloane becomes the target of his twisted obsession, it becomes clear that his ultimate fantasy is even more psychotic than either of them ever imagined.

Review:

When ex-FBI agent Sloan is asked to investigate the disappearance of her old childhood friend Penny she inadvertently needs to involve the case agent at the time. When Sloan sets up a meeting with him it is in the very moment that their eyes find each other that old emotions erupt. But Derek and Sloan have other things to deal with if they want to get anywhere with the case at hand.

There is a missing report of Penny to check out, including the almost nonexistent leads from the initial investigation. Their meeting is short and bittersweet but Sloan is determent to be completely focused on the job which she’s set out to do. It is with the uncover of a few new leads and information that Derek and Sloan find out that this missing report is much bigger and entails much more than just a woman who wanted a new start in life…or so they thought at the time.

With a mystery to solve that reaches further than either of them thought it is the fact of their proximity to each other that ignites a heat that gives a different kind of mystery to unravel.

That of each other’s heart….

With the novel Twisted the author demonstrates a vast knowledge of the FBI and local police force which thoroughly sets up the foundation for Sloan and Derek to shine upon. Moreover, it adds a life-like feel to the process of investigation. I for one appreciated the effort to add a chart of hierarchy in departments and definition of the terms. It is through Sloan that you get to know the center of this novel. She is tough as nails, loyal to those she cares about and has a passion for her job. Though her injury to her hand kept her from returning to the FBI she isn’t a woman to let that stop her from doing what she loves most, solving crime. With the request of Penny’s mother, Sloan initiates a further investigation of Penny’s case and this is where the suspense and mystery commences. It is with a well crafted plot that Andrea Kane held me captivated as each chapter started with a glimpse of the thoughts and feelings from a person who is possessed by a darker side. The combination of that glimpse and the story of Sloan and Derek trying to discover it all kept Twisted such an exhilarating read, the various perspectives enhanced to complete feel of the story.

Sloan and Derek are both strong minded individuals and this gives a sizzle and sparkle born from the very essence of their nature. You can feel from every moment spent between them that their feelings are far from over. Their sparkle combusted in the bedroom; hot, scorching, demanding - and in the end is so defining for both their characters. I loved reading their brisk, almost no-nonsense interaction. They feel intense, live intense and live according to their rules which gave a dynamic chemistry many readers enjoy between the main characters and so did I. Because they share a history together it provides for certain struggles between them personally but also gives the story a more spine chilling effect as it is. Without revealing too much of the plot I feel that the author kept adding layers and depth in to the story as your mind is taken one direction, the truth catches you by surprise from another.

The author painted a convincing picture of a distorted evil that is step by step revealed in its true shape and form but still manages to make me feel during a certain breaking point. There are many well fleshed out secondary characters ranging from co-workers, to campus staff, certain neighbors and students. And of course, not to forget three dachshunds with attitude: Moe, Curly & Larry. They all lead this story to a riveting conclusion, and though at first it took a bit of effort to get into the use of the terms, I was quickly wrapped up in Sloan’s world and case making me flip the pages rapidly. With that I have all the ingredients I need for a romance- suspense novel that will provide with chills, thrills and a passionate love story!

Andrea Kane with her latest novel Twisted, has written a chilling romance-suspense novel that nurtures a well crafted plot, creates an atmospheric feel of danger and takes you in to the mind of a twisted person whom is on the hunt for its Goddesses’.

  2. @ ROOB we recently received the sequel to the book Twisted and apparently the relationship if the FBI agents Sloan & Derek is continuing in the novel: Drawn In Blood. There no second storyline, just the cases at hand and their romance but I had a blast. The tension was increased that kept me focused on the story and what would be there around every corner they took.
