Jacob the Enforcer belongs to one of the many Nightwalker races that thrive on the dark of night. He has a job to do for his species and it's rather straightforward. He polices his people. During the full moon their animal urge to mate overcomes them, and if they stay within their race they never need to encounter the Enforcer. But if they cross the line and turn their lust to another species...say humans...it's Jacob's duty to prevent them and then to punish them severely for it. As this 'madness' grows worse and worse for his people, there is hardly a family who hasn't felt the brutal sting of Jacob's justice. Punishment is so dire and so feared, Jacob can call very few others his friend and the life the Enforcer leads is a very solitary one.
Then one night during a hunt for one of his own, he encounters the first human woman who will tempt him in all of his 622 years of life. Isabella is a simple Bronx gal who works at her local library, lives with her sister and owns a cat. She hardly expects a night of moongazing to change her life forever and send her falling for a man like Jacob in all kinds of outrageous ways. Heck, she certainly doesn't expect that he isn't exactly a 'man'... although he sure looks like one, smells like one and boy-oh-boy does he feel like one! As for the Enforcer, Jacob finds himself tempted beyond reason, needing Isabella to the point that he begins to strain against every law he has always upheld.
But before long the couple finds themselves fighting for their lives against evil, Jacob's bretheren, and even their own desires for each other. How can they find the way to resist one another before Jacob faces his own punishments...or before Bella ends up dead, torn up from the animal passion inside of him that she, as a human, is too frail to ever endure?
With Jacob Jacquelyn Frank managed to lure me into a world which is refreshing in its approach and contains emotionally vibrant characters!Jacob is the Enforcer of his kind and during two moons in a year his people suffer from an undeniable hunger to mate, especially with humans. The relative peace between them and the humans can’t be violated so there is a law that prohibits mating between them and Jacob is the enforcer of this law. Due to his powers, absolute control over himself and his emotions and the fact that he has punished many of his kind he is a feared member. Until one night when a human, Isabella, fell from the sky and into his lap….
I never expected to be so captivated by this story! There isn’t much out there that isn’t written yet, still Jacquelyn Frank managed to have a different approach with a new culture that immediately made me want to know more, vivacious characters that splattered from the pages and a prophecy that announces a whole new chapter in the world of the Nightwalkers. The first thing that caught my attention was the intensity of the characters, their personality and feelings are so well written it flairs them to life in my mind’s eye. Jacob and Isabella have at first a leashed passion humming between them and this is tauntingly build up by the author and when this is set free between them my heartbeat actually sped up in the scintillating described scenes.
From the first page the story held me focused on this new demon world, explaining, introducing all its characters, setting the stage with the spotlight on two characters who immediately captured me in their love story. Isabella is a woman who is thrown in a new world, she deals with this in her own way and the witty humor, the courage but most of all her vivid personality made me relate to her on all levels that is important. To see Jacob change from this distant, almost detached Enforcer into a man, a mated man, who’s discovering the depths of his heart but still is remaining a ferocious attitude as an Enforcer made me hungrily devour the pages.
Isabella uncovers an old prophecy that rings a new era in the Demon world and has serious effect on the demon way of live. The development of Isabella and Jacob in their love is so intense, their dialogue sizzles with emotions of humor, angst, courage but most of all love as so much is changing around them. As their love story continues various secondary characters lighted up this story even more and with a plot that holds me curiously in its grip what is going to happen next I feel that Jacquelyn Frank has made a statement with Jacob that shines with her talent and I for one am more than welcoming her in the paranormal genre with her Nightwalker series.
Jacquelyn Frank gives with ‘The Nightwalkers’ voice to some enticing demons which beckons the reader to venture in to their world and feel the magic.
The idea of another man touching that precious skin, kissing her sweet, delicious mouth, was more than he could stand. What she was suggesting this time was too much. Beyond too much. “Over my dead body…over my obliterated soul will I ever allow such a thing?” The declaration was a cross between a growl and a soft roar. Bella could see him shaking from head to toe, could feel it vibrating through the door behind her. In all of an instant, the cool, sophisticated Jacob disappeared and a possessive beast reared its head in his place. Now that is more like it,Isabella mused, with a mental smile.
