Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard living, ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world- to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He's got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. If he can't have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers...
Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, found by a miracle, the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him...
This book gives a new vibe to the BDB series of J.R. Ward! Nothing is what it seems, story lines shift and the battle continues. Butch and Marissa conquer their place within the series with an exploding story and a sizzling love that claims the reader. The other warriors give you the ultimate, the best of what their world has to offer though I missed more of unique warrior conversation.
We get hints of what is going on with Butch as you start reading and J.R. Ward slam dunked this tough, smart mouthed cop we know as Butch, no wonder he wanted/ needed his own story! Marissa develops as a true woman of worth with one moment with Butch were I thought, “ Yes, yes, finally you show the spirit you posses!” With Vishous as a major secondary character J.R. Ward almost creates a perfect ménage-a-trios, you can’t help but be swept away with his inner emotional turmoil.
The triangle between V, Butch and Marissa overwhelmed me with waves of emotion, not knowing whether I can define how it made me feel as a reader. The story of pre-transition John continues also in this book and he gets more interesting by the minute, Zsadist shows himself from another side, interesting but also making me wish for some bad ass comments. Overall this novel creates a hurricane of emotions, show great fantasy from the author and letting us know the stories are long from told!
This is definitely a Realms keeper!
