My first time reading Joey W Hill + Giveaway

It’s morning and I’m sitting here in front of my pc, cup of decaf coffee ready and…my mind not. When I thought of the title I was sure as shit of myself that I would dish up a column-ish story about my first time with a novel from Joey W Hill. I’m actively searching my brains memory files as we speak so I can tell you how I got entangled in the backlist of this author. *sips on coffee*

*3 minutes later…silence is becoming annoying*

*looks at shelves hoping the covers triggers my memory*

*a choir of angels rise and sing HALLELUJAH!*

Of course, A MERMAID’S KISS *duh* *que Cecline Dion with; It’s all coming back to my nooooooooow*

It was the summer of 2009 and ROOB received some promo bookmarks from an author named; Joey W Hill. As always I fired up google and let it hook me up with all sorts of links. I ended up on her site, I strolled along and whoops there it was…an author firmly bleeping on my radar. JWH’s Daughters of Arianne lured to me like a siren to a sailor and I wanted…greedily wanted. But I have a love/hate affair going on with Trade paperbacks, I love the format, I hate the pricing, so I had to wait. Can I tell you guys I’m not a patient woman. Though my name is Leontine and I’m part Leo of Zodiac sign, I’m not a laid back person when it comes to the books I want. Oh no, I’m roaring my needs.

So I don’t know what happened, perhaps the stars aligned or dame faith worked her devious magic but Cecile from ALL I WANT AND MORE held a contest with A MERMAID’S KISS as a prize. I was ready to make a sacrificial offer when the contest ended and not long after I received an e-mail with the words; You’ve won a book at my place…come get A Mermaid’s Kiss. Can I say I had an orgasmic feel of elation? In no time I was the proud owner of my copy of A Mermaid’s Kiss and in September I read it. You want to know how hard and fast I fell for Joey W Hill’s imagination? Go here to read my review of A MERMAID’S KISS.

Now I don’t glom often and I temporarily overcame my hate for Trade paperbacks to buy & pre-order all the books from the Daughter’s of Arianne & the Vampire Queen series. This author pushes all my buttons with lyrical prose, well fleshed out characters, quirky humor, great sexing and a romance that begins with a spark and ends with a freaking blazing inferno, rockin’ my romance world with high scores on my rating scale.

She even gave me two female protags that ended up in my hall of fame. I’m normally not an easy gal to be wow-ed with female characters but Mina from A Witch’s Beauty ( 5 stars *thud* sooo good!!) and vampire queen Lady Elyssa Amaterasu Yamato Wentworth are females I would love to call BFF’s. They combine darkness with light and add quirky humor to it in the mean time, I love how they handle men and their life.

Since my first time was almost a back-to-back read of A Mermaid’s Kiss & A Witch’s Beauty they will always have that extra glow….cause, it was my first time after all *smiles* For the Smutty Researchers At Play I read THE MARK OF A VAMPIRE QUEEN (review will be posted tomorrow) and again this is a series that completely has me in its grip. To Lyssa; I know you and I had to take a long moment for me to understand the depth of your heart and soul but you amazed me in TMoaVQ! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. To Jacob; You had me at hello and ‘Ta gra agam ort’ as the hero of heroes you are*content sigh*. And to Gideon; I’m counting the days until we meet again and though I know a HEA is going to happen with another I wished I met you sooner. Because I know in my heart of hearts I was secretly the one for you *grin*

Okay, mushy fangirl lovey-dovey things aside, I have to share the cover hussy side of me as well. No, no, if you're at my place you have to "endure" the hardship of looking at pics like these! I was in the Walhalla of covers when I googled images on JWH’s books and I just had to share my favorite one till now with you all:

- Enters state of cover bliss –

Now with Joey W Hill’s permission I copied a small excerpt from her site, which is loaded with book info – excerpts and links ;) Here read a bit about the scorching connection Lyssa and Jacob share…fan and ice cubes are available!

The Mark of the Vampire Queen

Erotic/BDSM Paranormal Romance

© Copyright 2008 - All Rights Reserved

Background – this chapter occurs in the aftermath of an unpleasant encounter with Lyssa’s enemy, the vampire Carnal, and his young human servant, Melinda. No real spoilers here, never fear – we all know Carnal is a lowlife!

Jacob thought he’d be worn out and simply seek oblivion. Instead he took his Mistress again and again, using them both hard. The world might treat the idea with crass vulgarity, but in the darkness, with despair closing in, a man found sacred sanctuary in the wet heat of a woman’s pussy. His woman’s.

Exhaustion finally took some of the pain, leaving it vibrating discordantly off of the waves of the last orgasm, but it wasn’t enough. He pulled out only to give him the ability to maneuver his mouth down her throat toward the sweet taste of her nipples, the valley between her breasts. When his hand slid between her thighs, she opened to him, let his fingers slide into the channel he’d already soaked with his fluids and her own. Her breath whispered out in a quiet sigh of pleasure.

Perhaps Carnal should not have spoken so hastily about inferior mortal stamina. Her thoughts drifted through his mind, her pleasure with him spurring his efforts.

And do vampires value stamina in bed over other attributes? When he thrust his cock into her again, her tender tissues took him slowly, her hips tilting up as he slid his arm under her waist, his palm spreading out between her shoulder blades to bring her to his mouth, nip at her sternum. Tease the flesh of her breasts with his beard.

Like size, it’s what they do with it that matters. For the man…or vampire…who doesn’t know what he’s doing, stamina can become never-ending…torment. When she moaned, he relished the sound fiercely, deepening his penetration, knowing as her nails curled into his back and her cunt muscles tightened that he would make her come again. And again. Her climaxes, her screams would drive the memories back, let him fall into a sleep where they could not follow and strangle him.

“What about the man who knows what he’s doing and has stamina?” He nudged into her hair and bit her ear, moving to the tender skin below. Need pulsed like blood hunger beneath the thin veil of his teasing.

She drew his lips insistently back to hers.

“That man I might just have to keep forever.”

He fell into exhausted sleep, still deep inside her. She’d had her arms twined around his shoulders as he rested in the cradle of her thighs, pressing her into the mattress. When he woke that way several hours later, she surprised him further by staving off her dawn slumber with creative use of his morning erection, bringing them both to peak again.

  1. I've heard so much about this author and never read her. So I'd be honored to win a copy of one of her back titles.

My first. Is the first time I read Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas. My jaw literally dropped to the floor. And I've been reading those books ever since with a big old blush on my face and you know nothing really gets me! LOL!

  2. I recently read my first Joey Hill, Vampire Mistress and I omg I loved it!!!! I went back and got her first in the series and really need to read it!!

I had one of those moments with Moon Called by Mercy Thompson. Maybe I just wasn't used to reading UF, but I will never forget the first time I read that book...blew me away :)

  3. I've also heard great things about her books, but I haven't had a chance to read any yet.

A first time...? Hmmm... I wish I could remember the first e-book I won in a giveaway. I do remember that shortly thereafter I discovered the amount of fantastical smut that was only available in e-book format, and I quickly realized I needed to get some sort of reader ASAFP. Thank goodness for eBay and my poor overworked Palm Pilot, which is still chugging along *fingers crossed*.

A first for me... let's see. I remember reading Magic Bites for the first time and just being blown away by the world building and level of details in the story. Totally ruined a lot of other UF for me....

  6. O.M.G!! That excerpt! Yesterday when a couple of people were talking about this author, I only took down notes. Now I need to run to Amazon, like..now, to add to my wishlist!

A first? ...hmmm.. *mentally weeds out illegal and inappropriate images* LOL! I'm going to have to go with who really kicked off my obsession I have with smutty goodness, and that was reading Larissa Ione's first book in the Demonica series. YUM! I had been soo used to reading YA, that I forgot that adults have some pretty yummy minds, and she quickly helped me remember!:P I don't think I'll forget that book!

  9. I haven't had the pleasure of reading one of these books but I love the covers for the Vampire Queen series. They are what first got my attention.

The series that got me hooked on PR was Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward. As soon as I was done with Dark Lover I went out and bought the rest of the series. Some books are better than others but overall this series is at the top of my list. V is my favorite.

  17. I've been wanting to read Joey W Hill, but like you, I hate trade paperback pricing so I've been putting them off.

I well remember reading Dead Until Dark, the first Sookie Stackhouse book. I hadn't read a vampire (or any paranormal) book in years, but a friend started telling me about True Blood and how it was based on a book series. I don't get HBO, so I decided to read the book instead. When I started reading, I thought, "Whoa Nellie, this is not your grandmother's paranormal". Anyway, that was it, I'm now completely hooked and there's no going back.

Here's a first for you: this is the first time I've been to your blog and am drooling all over my keyboard. The covers and all of the lovely books are outstanding.

I have been hearing wonderful things about Joey Hill and would love to be a winner. Thanks!

  19. ROFL, you're too funny. I can so see myself sitting at my desk pondering about how to start a post like this. Exactly like you. *g*

Ok, I have some good first time stories to share... let's see, when I was 16 there was this boy... Oh wait, regarding books you say? I have some of those too, but you know what? I'll save them for our IRL meeting next week!! Squeee! Can't believe it's almost there! :D

Regarding Ms Hill's books I'm an enthusiast! I've read some of her Ellora Cave books and absolutely loved them. They were BDSM books too and quite something different than I was used to read in that genre! The Vampire series' first three books are on my ereader too, eagerly waiting to be read! :)

  20. The covers of Joey's Vampire series are so hot! I have the first couple of books in my TBR pile. I love to stare at them, and, of course, I can't wait to read them!!

Here's my first: The first book from Ellora's Cave I read was TEMPTING THE BEAST by Lora Leigh. WOW!!! It was excellent, and that's the book that got me hooked on paranormal erotic romances.

  22. Leontine, just wanted to say I had to read your review for A Mermaid's Kiss and was tickled pink about the fan girl comments. Now I've got to check that book out along with Joey's Vampire series.

I found an excerpt for Vampire Mistress on AuthorIsland, and felt the intense anticipation on the part of Gideon and Mistress Anwyn. Definitely getting this one. *smiles*

  23. I have been eying Joey W. Hill vampire books for awhile now. I have a pile of TBR books so I haven't bought them yet. This would be a great opportunity to get hooked.

    Thanks!

  24. Oh my gosh, I so remember my first Joey W. Hill read. It was a long time ago and I'd just discovered Ellora's Cave and their intigueing rating system. (Side note: I don't think they use this rating system anymore though...) The highest level of eroticism was rated Extreme and I just HAD to know all that this tantalizing rating entailed.

My first Extreme rated Ellora's Cave read with Joey's ICE QUEEN. Immediately I became hooked on her seamless delivery of both intense emotion and detailed sex scenes. I quickly followed IQ with its sequel, MIRROR OF MY SOUL, and I've never looked back or stopped pimping this amazing author.

  27. I've read most (all?) of the books in the Natural Law series but I haven't read the vampire series (yet). I've heard great things about it.

Firsts? Well, the first book I read involving more than one man and a woman was the Men of August series by Lora Leigh. I felt quite naughty reading them back then but I've moved on since then!!

(plus, now I'm a bit squicked out by menage with brothers/relatives).

I remember the first time I read any type of erotica, it was from Ellora's Cave my jaw dropped and my cheeks blushed. Loved every minute of it. And still reading them.
