Cover Summary:
Found wandering in a field as a child, Lee Ross was given a name by the state and placed in a foster home–without anyone realizing she wasn’t entirely human.

All her life, she’s tried to dismiss the odd dreams that have plagued her, dreams of monsters creeping through the night and a man, fighting demons by her side. But the bruises she wakes up with are all too real to ignore

Then the man from dreams appears in the flesh. His name is Kalen and he insists that her destiny lies in his world, the world of her dreams.

To save their people, he must convince Lee to give everything she knows, follow her heart and cross into the Under Realm, even though once she does, she’ll never be able to return.

My Review: I feel that whatever genre Shiloh Walker tackles she delivers a story where great characters can be found. THROUGH THE VEIL introduced me, not only to a new world, but also to a magnetic and attention grabbing pair. Most of the times when I begin a new paranormal series it takes a bit of time for me to make the world my own and get comfortable with the terms. As a reader that makes me thankful when a glossary of terms is included like the one I found in Through The Veil, so I’m not going in completely blind. However, it doesn’t take much to get completely intrigued by the set-up though because the moment I met Lee was the moment secrets and mysteries introduced its self.

Lee is a woman who emanates vulnerability but at the core is a warrior. She is courage meshed with doubts, power wedded to femininity and she needs it all on the road of self discovery. I love the kind of heroine Lee is, she has backbone but at the same time has fears that balance her powerful she-warrior side. The questions she has are the questions I had, and she took me on a journey to another world that was bleak in comparison to Earth. What I think is also exceptionally well done is the gradual understanding of the new world Lee was thrust in opposed to instant acceptance. Doubts along with certain instincts and realizations made her emotions revolving her personal issues all the more believable.

Kalen Brenner is the male lead and from the introduction he had me. He is the weary leader of the resistance against the Warlords and the Sirvani but it is his never wavering passion to save his people that burns bright inside him and first catches the attention. From his looks to his warrior code, everything screams he is a skilled man; in charge, dangerous, feral but it is all encompassed by a compassionate and loyal heart. Add my personal lingual g-spot, a hint of an Irish brogue, and I was more than a little interested in him.

The back story of Lee and Kalen was incredibly woven in to the current storyline and they are two formidable characters. But bring them together and magic happens; the dialogues are bold and crisp, almost a back and forth parry of strong wills and the body chemistry was tantalizing good. The inner monologues are alive with all they feel, totally connecting me with their emotional state and trail of thoughts. What also added to their chemistry as a pair was the craving the felt for each other, it was almost a ravenous attraction humming with an electrifying crackle between them. Though the sensuality wasn’t the focus between them it flared in the cadence of their emotional state, never letting me doubt what they had between them was intense and real.

Shiloh Walker created some dense world building and I needed my time to absorb all details and nuances in her storytelling. The set up where the warlords of Anqar created gates to Ishtan and how they wreaked their devastation there created a grim war-torn setting where little joy was to be found. The gruesome acts of the Warlords upon the Ishtan inhabitants made them not very redeem worthy yet it was necessary for a chain reaction where the spirit and resilience of certain people shined like a beacon that made me root for all of them. The mystery of the gates, of Lee herself, and the ongoing war kept me guessing with certain characters where their loyalties lied. Still, there were one or two plot points that made it very easy to guess where the story was headed.

Kalen and Lee worked very hard to make sense of it all, feeling a pending doom looming over them and they were supported by a range of characters, still the cast still had a very intimate feel. Morne Ramire, the healer. Eira, the witch. Dais, Kalen’s weapon lieutenant, were just some of them. There were more character on their side but these few really added a voice of their own to it. On the other side, in Anqar, I witnessed their way of life which on some issues revolted me. The High Lord and his diabolical deeds got the instant ‘throttle the SOB’ reaction from me, which for a fiend is only a compliment. There was also Raichar Taise who wasn’t completely bad but not completely good either, in the end I felt a bit for him though. With the opposite point of views from the Ishtan and Anqar characters I got a total picture of the why – what and how. All the storylines culminated in the end to a conclusion that baffled me. A few things I suspected but the grand finale had my eyes riveted to the pages. Whatever pace was lacking a bit in the beginning was all made up in the ending.

When everything stands against you there are those few that will arise to the challenge, Kalen and Lee took me on an emotion fraught and challenging journey! THROUGH THE VEIL is a story where chapter by chapter I was drawn further in to a gritty world, led by an amazing romantic pair and a cast of characters that contained a force all on its own. Shiloh Walker added another series to my shelves where I want more of!

My review of VEIL OF SHADOWS will be posted next monday on September 6th 2010.

Quote:
… - Lee felt like she had fallen into some kind of comic book but the artist had neglected to give her a decent superpower. She didn’t belong here. They knew how to fight, and if they were scared, didn’t show it. Lee, however, was pretty sure she had a huge, neon-lit sign over her head flashing letters that read, I’m scared and I can’t handle this. Please send me back home.

Quote:
His hands stroked down her sides, cupped her ass and pulled her tight against him. “I want you safe,” he muttered, his voice harsh, guttural. “Look at me, Lee.”
Her lids were so damned heavy, it was an effort just to open her eyes, but she couldn’t resist that harsh, guttural command. Tipping her head back, she stared at him. “Kalen…” her lashes started to flutter back down over her eyes, and Kalen growled. “Look at me,” he repeated, his voice still harsh and demanding. “Watch me…”
A slow, seductive smile curved her lips. “I’m looking. I am watching you, Kalen. You’re all I see – even when I thought you were just a figment of my imagination.”
Hunger twined with the gut-deep need for her, a need that went beyond love, beyond lust, beyond anything and everything he’d ever known. Kalen straightened away from the tree and pivoted “I want a real bed with pillows and silk sheets.” She smiled at him. I don’t need a bed. Just make love to me.”

My Review: With DEMON FROM THE DARK Kresley Cole steers the overall plot arc to new heights and possibilities. From the moment I started reading this new IAD novel the story pulsated with the force of new threats and dangers, lots of recurring and new characters, and I was whisked away to the demon hell plane where a blooming romance just wow-ed me. I couldn’t get enough of the plot arc but the chemistry between Malkom and Carrow was absolutely the dream of any romance lover.

The reasons behind Carrows introduction to Malkom on his demonic hell plane aim for enough drama as is but I was temporarily completely absorbed by the off-the-chart magnetic pull between these two main characters. The language barrier created misunderstandings and the internal thoughts of both Carrow and Malkom were at times endearing, emanating anger or frustration but most of all it endeared me so. Especially Malkom’s. The time spend in Malkom’s cave, which actually encompassed quite a few chapters and about five or six days, was rife with an abundance of conflicting emotions. At one hand Carrow is determined to do what needs to be done and at the other hand Malkom mesmerizes and enamors her. Not only are Kresley Cole’s signature sensually charged scenes present, the bathing scene is toe curling good and Malkom’s kisses are definitely getting me hot and bothered, but there’s also room for their back story’s to unfold.

Carrow is a Witch and draws her power from happiness. She’s is known as a party-girl but besides her cheery, upbeat nature there is also a loneliness in her that was heart breaking at times. One of the things that made Carrow such a formidable character to read is that she gives as good as she gets. She has a quick-witted tongue, she can fight and can take a punch but in the presence of those she loves there is a wicked and softer side surfacing. She has backbone but also has her vulnerabilities and it turned her in to a great opponent for Malkom.

Malkom was without a doubt a male who just spoke to all my female wants and needs for a flawed hero. He was a blood slave turned commander, he takes the trust-issue to a whole other level and his past gives the heart wrenching reasons. I really was able to understand what drove him with his monologues due to the language barrier. His resilience, his willingness to discover, learn, open up bit by bit spoke of an inner strength and I fell for him just as hard as Carrow was. The sum of his personality traits wooed me at every turn and he is one of the reasons that make DEMON FROM THE DARK so special.

Of course the romance couldn’t remain all growing lovey-dovey as the plot came back full force that spun Malkom and Carrow’s world on their axes. The Ascension has reached another chapter with The Order and some of my favorite factions got hit hard, on a very personal level, and my anger rose with the characters at what was done. Lanthe, Regin, Uillean MacRieve, I love all these characters, the good ones and even the bad ones because together they shape a fascinating world where battles are fought, romance is worth everything and friendships are forged and treasured. The humor, especially coming from Lanthe, is present but toned down a bit for a somewhat grittier plot but the dialogues between all characters are crisp, acerbic at times and sizzle with their personalities.

With the plot and romance steaming full ahead there is a child character introduced who grabbed my attention as well, she’s a seven year old witch named Ruby. I always enjoyed the Witch faction but it also played second violin to the Valkyrie’s with all its beloved characters. I can tell you that with this entry Kresley Cole really let the Witches come in to play and I love the fact that each faction has its own strengths. The ending really ups the ante in terms of a recap of events, decisions are made and action will follow but I will have to wait for the next novel to discover how it will all play out.

With DEMON FROM THE DARK Kresley Cole does not only give me charismatic and unique characters whose personalities leap of the pages, or a fast-paced intriguing plot, or a powerful, seductive and sensual-laden romance. She does it all and fuses it with her strong and imaginative writing voice which just sucked me in and took me on a grand journey. I can only hope now that there is much more in store for us readers since this series has been a fantastic ride so far.

4.5 stars

Quote Carrow and Lanthe:
As she looked down at Ruby, it struck Carrow yet again that she now had a responsibility. Someone depending solely on her. “You’re going to be good for Miss Lanthe, right?” “Miss Lanthe?” The sorceress repeated, her blue eyes gleaming dangerously. “Why don’t you just buy me a minivan, zip me into mom jeans, and shoot me in the face?”

Quote Malkom:
His voice a deep rumble, he said, “Carrow is Malkom’s.”

Quote Carrow, later on in the story:
So beautiful. Her wild, lost male. How could this demon who’d known so much hurt and shame be so proud and good? She grazed the back of her fingers over his face, repeating his word, “Carrow is Malkom’s.”

I spy with my little eye...a hot new series!

I've "discovered" Anita Clenney on Facebook and ever since I traveled to her website I've been on pins and needles to share this fantastic new series, due released in 2011 by Sourcebooks Casablanca. I know, I know, it's still months away from New Years Eve but my wishlist for 2011 is rapidly growing already. I fear the moment I'm actually going to search for 2011 releases by my favorite authors *eek*

Since I had all the info to share with you I was patiently waiting for the first cover to be revealed. Of course next to all the tantalizing info I had to give you all something to look at too. I'm known for my cover hussy tendencies and this one is definitely rocking my world. Mysterie, *rowr* man-candy, tats, atmospheric backdrop, oh yeah, the blurb already did it for me but I so heart it when the cover hits it home for me. I'd say AWAKEN THE HIGHLAND WARRIOR is a solid 8.0 on my cover-gasm scale *grin*

Now here I give you the 411 on this series:

Modern-Day Highland Warriors Series (Who says WANT to highland warriors?...I do! :)

Secret Warriors. Ancient Evil. Destined Love. (<- This is such a MAJOR trigger for me *thud*)

Since the beginning of time, a clan of warriors has walked the earth, their quest to seek and subdue the demons disguised among us. Appointed by the Archangel Michael,(OMG it includes an Archangel - I iz so sold!)  these Scottish protectors rely on secrecy, just as the demons they battle.Only vague references in obscure long-ago writings give mention to these mysterious beings. These are the stories of the Connor Clan.

Book One:

Awaken The Highland Warrior -- Coming May 2011 from Sourcebooks Casablanca.

Mis-adventurous historian Bree Kirkland discovers a one hundred fifty year old warrior buried in a crypt behind her house. But Faelan, the warrior, isn’t dead. When this chauvinistic Scottish Warrior awakes, he has no choice but accept the help of this modern-day woman who’s rescued him, but she’s more fearsome than the demon trying to kill him. If he’s not careful, she’ll uncover every secret his clan has bled and died to protect.

Book Two:

The Secret Child -- Coming soon from Sourcebooks Casablanca.

When the powerful demon that left Amanda for dead discovers her empty grave, he comes seeking retribution. Knowing she can’t fight the demon alone, Amanda returns to her clan and the Scottish Warrior who betrayed her…the only man she’s ever loved.

Book Three:

His Brother's Keeper -- Coming soon from Sourcebooks Casablanca.

The only weapon that can kill the demon who’s trying to destroy the world is Tavis Connor’s brother’s talisman, but his brother has been captured and Tavis doesn’t know if he’s alive or dead. The Scottish Warrior risks his life to find his brother and finish the quest.

Isn't this all making your heart beat a bit faster? This is the second series from Sourcebooks casablanca that made it's way to my 2011 wishlist. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for more of this publishers releases!

It's my party and I...

*Julian walks up to the spotlight*

*He clears his throat*

“Dear friends and visitors of Leontine’s Book Realm. I’m proud to speak about the wild and wicked woman who you have met here, or else on ROOB, twitter, bookblogs or facebook *smiles*

It all began in the year 1976, on August 23rd, around the clock of 4 PM when *coughworldwonder#9cough* happened; Leontine was born into this World.

Between then and now she survived the 80’s with cartoons like Jem, Care Bears, Candy, Transformers, Mask and Jason and the Wheel Warriors – the latter three where her brothers influence :) She survived the immense shoulder pads, the perms and oh yeah; Rick Astley *eek* Her first Hollywood crush was Patrick Swayze and his face/body on posters would cover 2 walls of her 3 by 4 meters room. She protected those sacred meters from her 4 sibblings – all younger – like a bear defending her cave!

The nineties she survived her first true love, she cried buckets at watching Ghosts (Quote Sam Wheat: It's amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.) she was swinging her hips with girl friends to boombastic – No Limit & All That She Wants, she got herself a job at a children’s daycare center, fell in love again for the second time and was an arrogant biatch who thought she could rule the world *seriously*

At New Years Eve of 1999 come 2000 the world didn’t come to an end, instead she got married, she got to witness Tom Cruise going berserk on the couch of Oprah, got hooked on real life soap of the KARDASHIANS, discovered the world of English books and started ROOB and a blog.

Ladies and gents, I give you the naughty romance reader from that small country; The Netherlands, here she is…Leontine!!!!”

*cue opening of curtains*

*Leontine walks in to her realm escorted by half-werewolf, half-vampire Conall Dearghul and demon Malkom Slaine*

*blows kiss to Julian for introducing her*

~Giveaway~

Hi everyone,
I’ve got thirty-four candles to blow out *eek* but let me introduce to you the spectacular men at my sides; Conall from Larissa Ione’s SIN UNDONE and Malkom from Kresley Cole’s DEMON FROM THE DARK. They are not only here to partay with me *grin* but they will leave with one lucky commenter! (A: where the Book Depository Store will ship to and B: on Friday August 27 the name will be announced )

I think I’ve been announcing my b-day for the last two weeks now and I don’t know whether it was to prepare you or me for this event *smiles* I’ve celebrated my b-day with my family this weekend and they’ve sponsored my Be-Book e-reader YAY *does a happy dance*

The surprise today however was the fact that I “discovered” the blog template program Artisteer yesterday and hubby gave this today as an extra b-day pressie YAY Since I heart doing blog design this seriously triggers my creativity.

In September I will also be celebrating my b-day with Marissa - Pearl (who also has her b-day in August) and my sister, Natascha. My book wishlist is send and I know it will be a day that will go by way too quickly. When the ROOB-posse meets there are fun times to be had LOL

So I say; Let’s open a bottle of champaign, eat some cake and later on hit the dance floor with some golden oldies from the 80’s and 90’s!

Review: Amy Lane - Keeping Promise Rock

Purchase
Website Author

published January 18th 2010 (first published January 2010)
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press, 344 pages
Series: Promises #1
isbn1615813470 (isbn13: 9781615813476)
Book Origin: Personal E-Book Library

Cover Summary:
Carrick Francis has spent most of his life jumping into trouble with both feet. The only thing saving him from prison or worse is his absolute devotion to Deacon Winters. Deacon was Crick's sanity and salvation during a miserable, abusive childhood, and Crick would do anything to stay with him forever. So when Deacon's father dies, Crick puts his college plans on hold to help Deacon as Deacon has helped him.

Deacon's greatest wish is to see Crick escape his memories and the town they grew up in so Crick can enjoy a shining future. But after two years of growing feelings and temptation, the painfully shy Deacon finally succumbs to Crick's determined advances and admits he sees himself as part of Crick's life.

It nearly destroys Deacon when he discovers Crick has been waiting for him to push him away, just like Crick's family did in the past. When Crick's knack for volatile decisions lands him far away from home, Deacon is left, shell-shocked and alone, struggling to reforge his heart in a world where love with Crick is a promise, but by no means a certainty.

My Review: KEEPING PROMISE ROCK is a heart rendering coming of age m/m romance that follows the lives of Carrick “Crick” James Francis and Deacon Winter. It is a story of finding your own kind of family, of making mistakes and accepting the consequences but above all it is the evolving love two men share that tugged at my heart strings. Amy Lane took my in to the lives of Crick and Deacon, how they shared their youth, their teenage years and their twenties together. How a young innocent crush from Crick grew in to a burning, gut-deep love and finds it answered by the one and only man who owned his heart for so many years.

The lives of Crick and Deacon are hectic with ups and downs and rife with their emotions which made this story so captivating in its sincerity. This story doesn’t get sugar coated yet there is room for tender, loving and fun filled moments as well. At first the story is mostly told from Crick’s point of view and gave me a close connection to him and his budding love for the 5 years older Deacon. The innocence is very much present but Crick’s life is all but innocent, he has to take care of his younger sisters, his step-dad is an a**hole of the first order and a mother who doesn’t care. Later on the point of views blend from both Crick as well as Deacon’s side giving a more balanced and rounded storytelling.

Amy Lane begins this story with an attention grabbing chapter where events unfolds for Crick and ends with a cliffhanger. After that first chapter I was transported back in time to meet a young Crick on another life altering day. The first part of KPR I was pining for Deacon to acknowledge Crick’s emotions for him, we all remember how intense a first love can be. A look, a touch, a smile of that person can make your day and Deacon is a teenager who is just likable. He doesn’t come across as a goody two shoe but still is so charming, responsible and smart. He doesn’t open up to many but when he does I knew it was a profound moment, knowing that this person truly mattered to him. From the beginning Crick and Deacon have a connection that only grows and strengthens with the bitter sweet and the emotionally intense events unfolding throughout their lives. Crick is impulsive, energetic and loyal which doesn’t change much in the course of the years. It is his impulsive nature that tears him and Deacon apart.

Because KPR entails about 15 years and quite a lot of pages Amy Lane can really go in-depth with the character development and romance. The passion between Crick and Deacon is hot but the emphasis lies on the romantic development. There are homophobic issues, a teen-age pregnancy, alcoholism, losing friends and a war, all these more serious themes pass the venue and are just the bigger issues. At the heart it is the love between Deacon and Crick that swept me off my feet. Neither one if perfect, both make mistakes but it makes the love become all the more real. I connected to both because the story is so intimate, the characters are laid bare with all their strengths and flaws keeping no secrets from the reader. I was with them every step of the way to a happily ever after that became the culmination of all that Deacon and Crick wanted. Each other, family and the one place they called home, The Pulpit.

Separate and together the secondary characters; Crick’s sister Benny, friends Amy, Jon, Andrew etc cetera created a unit, a support system, a family. All their lives entwine within the larger picture and I held each dear to my heart. Amy Lane knows how to make her characters go through deep valleys but she provides a small group that will keep you going in the darkest hours. Love and friendship is something that encompasses a maelstrom of feelings and I couldn’t stop reading. There aren’t many stories where my notes are half a notebook page but KPR was one of those novels that I started and couldn’t put down, the characters and the narrating just kept pulling me back again and again.

KEEPING PROMISE ROCK is a story that inevitable draws you in to the lives of many colorful characters but Crick and Deacon are the center of it. The gripping events that they shared with me made a lasting impression and this is one of those m/m stories that will never leave my shelves. I want the chance to revisit them…

4.5 stars

Quote Crick:
Remember that song at Jon and Amy’s wedding? I need you, like I want you. Always and forever. I want you like I love you. Always and forever. Consider that a promise. Deacon.

Review: *fans self in memory* Chris Owen - 911

911
Written by Chris Owen
222 pages / 79000 words
ISBN: 1-933389-57-5
Available file types - html, lit, pdf, prc, paperback
Publisher: Torquere
Book Origin: Personal E-Book Library

Cover Summary:
Drew is a fireman who loves the rush and is looking for a roommate to share costs. Scott is a doctor looking for somewhere to live that isn’t with his now ex-lover. The match seems more than perfect when Scott moves in and it’s more than just costs that they share.

So what happens when along comes EMT Eric with his blond good looks and boyish smile? Will this twosome be able to become a threesome or does it spell disaster for all?

My Review: The story begins easy enough with two guys meeting, they become roomies, they feel an attraction growing and they end up sexing enough to create a dent in the mattress. Some months later love is received – returned and then declared, and you would think that would be the end of it but oh no, Chris Owen has lots more in store for this enthusiastic M/M reader!

911 reads like a sex-a-thon with incredible men yet I cannot say that it is an epic M/M novel that turned my book world on its axes. The story is simple, the cast of characters small and the writing is easy and compelling. In all honesty my mind tells me this was an all around enjoyable red, nothing more, nothing less.

How does Chris Owen do it then, to make me smile at the antics of the three lead characters? They completely succumb me in to their lives, the struggles, getting me to care for them and at some point I was discovering the notion that I was savoring the story being told. Like I said, 911 is a sex-a-thon where one man, Drew (firefighter) comes together with Scott (doctor in residence) and they form a pair who’s got it hot and heavy for each other and then months later they become a threesome with Eric (paramedic).

The story encompasses a few years and over this time period the emphasis lies on the sex play, relationship - personality and family issues, and a whole lot more bed play. The shower, bed and living room are favorite backdrops for the lustful bouts of erotic scenes. Scott loved the dirty talk and Drew is more than willing to giving it to him! The volume of lube used could fill a tub, I read more; “Oh God, Oh God – love you – wanna come – gonna come – fuck me – suck me” and so on that I was almost crossed eyed from reading it all. Yet I can’t complain about it because while all this turbo-charged eroticism erupted on the pages I simultaneously got acquainted with three incredible men.

Drew is without a doubt the leader of the pack. Full of bravery, often in charge, an adrenaline junkie and embracing life to the fullest. Scott is a doctor who is currently fulfilling his residency. He’s somewhat of a nurturer, an introverted, hold-back person but when he knows things are wanted he can respond enthusiastically. When Eric was introduced he was a bit insecure due to dramatic events from the past. He is loyal, strong and loves with an unrelenting force. Each lead male brought something of his own to the story and from that, through the struggles of making a Ménage work, they gradually interconnect with each other.

Of course with three men there are also issues that arise in the romantic side of it all. Some were coming from family but mostly issues between the triad of men. Small things that lead up to outbursts of anger or irritations and where through actual dialogue’s they had to make compromises and connect with each other on an emotional side. Throughout the entire story it becomes a step by step progress of them getting to know each other on a level that truly matters, where they not only become sexual partners but also partners in every other way that is important of life.

Because of the fact 911 encompasses a few years I got to feel very involved in Drew, Scott’s and Eric’s lives. Though there might be a lot of mind-melting hot sexing too, the character development and romance prevented it from becoming just a string of sex scenes. Then there is a twist in the end that just yanked the story right on to a higher rating for me, it was the culmination of what Drew, Scott and Eric meant to each other giving 911 a conclusion that had my romantic heart beating a bit faster.

911 was a M/M triumvirate that made me smile for the humor, care for the characters and dab away a tear at the end. This is just one of those stories that oozed fun gay eroticism that carries a satisfying emotional punch. Allow yourself to become a spectator in the lives of Drew, Scott and Eric, it will be first class voyeurism, I promise you that!!

3.5 stars

Quote Drew when a threesome with another male was possibility:

And as soon as he realized that he knew he wanted to take them both upstairs to Tom's room and do anything he could. He wanted to fuck, ride, suck, come, watch, taste, jerk off, anything. He wanted to kiss them and feel them and hear them and just be in the same room if Scott said yes. “No.” Scott didn't even look at him. “No?” he said, then remembered that it was Scott choice. That made Scott look at him though. “Uh, maybe?” Scott offered, then shook his head. “No, what I mean is, yeah, maybe we play, but no, I don't want to play with you, ‘cause I really like you and I can see it getting really fucking complicated, and I can't deal with that right now. Drew ... he's my lover, right? He's mine and I'm his, and if you were just some guy we'd be upstairs with you in a heartbeat. But you're not, you're Tom and I like you and you're not going to be here tomorrow night, and I can't deal with that.” Scott took a deep breath and then took Drew's hand in his. “I'm sorry." Tom smiled a little and put a hand on the back of Scott's neck, kissing him gently. “You know, that's the nicest rejection I've ever gotten.” He turned to Drew and said, “Thank you.” Then he turned and walked away. Drew just stared at Scott for a moment. “Love you. Fucking glad you're the smart one. But ... Christ. I love you." Scott squeezed his hand. “Take me home, Drew."

Cover Summary:
In her first original paperback in more than six years, New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann delivers an unforgettable novel of contemporary romance and thrilling suspense.

When history professor Alison Carter became a consultant to the film version of the Wild West legend she’d dedicated her career to researching, she couldn’t possibly know that she would not only get a front row seat to a full-blown Hollywood circus, but that she would innocently witness something that would put her life in danger. Nor did she expect that a tall stranger in a cowboy hat would turn the movie -- and her world -- completely upside down…

A.J. Gallagher didn’t crash the set in dusty Arizona to rub elbows with Hollywood’s elite. Unable to ignore ghosts from the past that refuse to stay buried, A.J. came to put an end to the false legend that has tarnished the reputation of his family. But when he confronts Alison, sparks fly. And when she becomes targeted by ruthless criminals, suddenly she and A.J. must face the intense attraction that threatens to consume them, in order to survive the danger that threatens their very lives.

My Review: I have only read one other Brockmann novel but in both cases I have enjoyed this author’s ability to entwine the past with the present. I must say that the beginning of INFAMOUS did not impress me all that much and I wasn’t sure if this story was going to ‘do it’ for me. Nevertheless, in the first hundred and twenty-five pages it was the mystery of Silas Quinn’s legend that kept pulling me back in rather than the suspense that came along with the murder or the romance budding between A.J and Alison. The murder felt very low-key and so out of sync with the rest of the story that I had a hard time grasping the connection to the actual story being told. With the murder being easily pushed to the background it was the legend of Silas Quinn, his wife Melody and a gambler named Jamie Gallagher who really caught my interest.

The legend of Silas Quinn’s epic love for his wife Melody, his heroic effort to defeat the Kelly gang in the wild west and the tragic death of his wife by the hand of Jamie Gallagher was a well known story in American history. This legend contained all that I love in a legend. First of all, nothing is what it seems, there is a vicious enemy to hate, a resilient heroine to admire, an anti-hero to cheer for, a tragic love to be swept away by and events that got glossed over by the victor in this legend. However, Jamie Gallagher had a story to tell…even though he was no longer among the living.

At the start I really had to make an effort to stay in to this story with a plethora of characters being introduced, various story threads being set-up and the main characters to get to know. I was also thrown out of my reading rhythm by the fact I had a hard time to distinguish the ghost narration by Jamie Gallagher. He sometimes was interacting with A.J. but often I was also inside his head, getting a piece of his inner thoughts and this wasn’t emphasized by an italic font or anything else that made me aware I was suddenly inside Jamie’s head, or that he was recapping certain events from the past. As the story progressed I got a feel for Jamie’s narration but I feel it was an unnecessary struggle if it was printed differently.

INFAMOUS may not have started with a bang writing wise but I did fall for the main characters! Alison is a history professor working as a consultant on the set of the latest movie made about the legend of Silas Quinn. She is a woman who gets completely absorbed by her profession and subject, is someone who is very focused on the detail and methodically in acquiring information. Yet underneath all that sufficiency hides a passionate woman who has so much more to share and to give then her intelligence. I really liked Alison, she is a bit of an info geek on the time period of Silas Quinn. One of her first conversations with A.J is where she scalds him for wearing briefs under his jeans, that is not done for this movie’s time period, and yes, she can notice if a guy is wearing briefs under his jeans which frankly impressed me. On the other hand, her feelings, her insecurities and doubts regarding A.J and his statement he sees one dead person, is believable and heartwarming at the same time.

A.J. is a man who didn’t push my buttons but I still liked him so very much. He is an emotionally wounded hero which turned him in to an introvert and a loner, but with Alison he was also kind and charming with a core of virility that left no doubt he wanted Alison with all his pent up desires. He is a man who went through hell at some point in his life and erected walls in protection and to see them crumbling down was heart tugging and at times a bit emotional. The fact that he hasn’t been among crowds for very long added a clumsy note to his behavior and interaction which was adoring at times and didn’t diminish his manliness. His interaction with his deceased great-grandfather and the problems stemming from that interaction gives this story a humorous note. I often had to smile or giggle and Jamie Gallagher is a huge contributor to me loving this story so.

Jamie Gallagher was just as important to tell this tale as A.J and Alison were. Sometimes you meet characters that almost overpower the story with their larger than life persona and share a love story that moves you to tears. This is what Jamie did for me, he charmed my in all his outlaw ways and made a believer out of me in what an incredible man he really was. He “reconnected” with his great grandson to finally have the truth on the table about his side of the story what happened in Jubilation. That story is given by diary fragments and Jamie’s own recap of events. He is the kind of infamous man whose own code of honor made him a man I could love. Who inspired his children and family, and as the story progressed I totally understood why he had that effect on them. He wasn’t perfect but the depth of his emotions made him a hero nonetheless.

Everything in INFAMOUS was gradual, the mystery took it’s time to unravel but always kept it on a level of fascinating, the romance was a slow-burn one but when it ignited the hunger, the craving between Alison and A.J it was palpable on the pages. The issues that raised between A.J and Alison due to the fact Jamie Gallagher was a ghost, and A.J. could talk to him, were realistic and believable. Though I think in the end the solution of whether or not Alison believed A.J. was a bit on the easy side, there was just so much more going on I didn’t think about it until writing this review.

With four hundred and thirty-three pages there is a lot going on, much more then I can talk about but what I loved so much was the steady increase of romance, mystery and character depth that created an ending that moved me to tears. I rather have a story beginning slow but ending with a bang then the other way around and INFAMOUS was the former allowing me to totally fall in love with the main characters, which not only included A.J. and Alison but also Jamie Gallagher, Hugh Darcy, Melody and the many Gallagher’s in Heaven, Alaska.

INFAMOUS is not a perfect story yet there is a powerful combination to be found of a past romance, entwined with a present, budding one. A legend mystery to unravel that kept my eyes glued to the pages and in the end everything culminated in to a romance-high that made my heart ache a bit to end this story.

4 stars

Quote A.J.:
That was the word she used to describe herself – fit. A.J. would’ve used other words. Like holy shit and sweet baby Jesus.
A)If it were up to me Alison, you’d never wear clothes again. Nor, for that matter, would I…

Quote Graig Lutz talking with A.J. about his ghost great-grandfather:
From what you just told me, he was just filling my spot until you got your ass in gear and called me. He got you back in habit of actually having a conversation, maybe asking for a little advice. Hey, you know what would really convince me that he was real? If he went into the future, just a few days, and found out the winning Calafornia SuperLotto numbers.”
“I don’t think he can time travel,” A.J. said.
“Have you asked him?” Lutz asked. “because if we win a few hundred million dollars? Neither one of us will ever have a problem getting laid again. You can be batshit crazy with that kind of money, my friend. And you’ll still have three-ways, every night.”
“I don’t do three-ways,” A.J. said.
“And there’s the proof that you’re batshit crazy,” Lutz said. >>I ditto that sentiment!

Quote Alison:
Alison sat at the kitchen table I her quirky little rented house in Junilation, Arizona, as a man who claimed to be the great-grandson of the infamous outlaw, Jamie “Kid” Gallagher, sat down across from her.
A man she’d spent most of the evening having sex with.
Great sex.
Fabulous sex.
Creative, inventive, extraordinary, laughter-filled, passionate sex.

Column: I had a panic attack, JennJ saved the day + Quickie Contest

Have you’ve ever seen me panicked?

No?

That is probably for the best since it ain’t a pretty sight!

JennJ is one of those peeps who did though…why you might wonder?

Well, you take one impulse idea to change the format of your blog.

You take that request to one of the best blog designers you know and have her way with your blog.

Then she asks all sorts of questions to install the new template that shrinks my blog ego to the size of raisons.

Then, when I give said blog designer some super sekret blog info and gets the template installed but now all my widgets are all on the left, which can happen but hubby raced for a bag as I started to hyperventilate.

My blood pressure went from a slightly worrisome 140 (because I’m soooooo good at giving away the control *rolls eyes at self*) to a *OhMyGawdWhyOhWhyDidIHaveToChangeAnything??!!* rant to the computer.

JennJ was all calm…she was the voice of wisdom…the light at the end of the tunnel.

We got it sorted out…of course, what else did you expect from JennJ! *grin*

JennJ is the goddess of man candy – see the evidence of my new header hunk.

Every question or request I fired at her, yes an M16 had nothing on me because me in a panicked state loses all form of friendliness *shameface* But JennJ calmed me down, worked with my requests - can still hug her for the extra time she put in template – and hit the bulls eye with my new blog expanding, gorgeous stylized drop down menu *dreamboat sigh*

It’s a week later now and I’m all calm, confidence and smiles again and love, love, LOVE what JennJ did. I loved it from the start but my panic attack prevented me from fully inhaling the slimmer, slick format.

The why behind it all you might wonder?

I was completely head over heels for the sand dollar template, mainly because it has a wider blogpost body and I know my reviews eat up space. I didn’t want visitors to have a scroll finger from reading my reviews. But as I entered some blog networks who took a screenshot of my blog I noticed it was all scrambled up. It made me wonder how many peeps saw my blog like that. Then I was starting to have more features, more challenges and I wanted a drop down menu. Well let me tell you how many grey hairs that gave me…it’s L’Oreal every 8 weeks for sure!!!!

Since I tweaked my blog with tutorials (as I’m a stubborn Leo thinking I can do blog design myself) I just kept tweaking it for two years but with adding the codes for the drop down menu I just had to admit defeat…so there you have it. My breaking point was reached and I went to JennJ from Sapphire Blog Design to make my blog template all better without losing the look I love so much :)

So JennJ, thank you for holding my hand through the changes and giving me what I so desperately wanted!! You iz made of awesome hon!!!

Soft shoulders and dangerous curves…

Forces of Nature, Book 2

Braden can’t deny he’s always wanted Chelsea, but getting involved wouldn’t be fair. She has college and big dreams ahead of her—he has no desire to leave Jaffrey’s Cove. Plus, there’s the fact merfolk women often take more than one lover. Share her? Not in this lifetime.

When Chelsea’s plans for the future fall apart, the only bright spot remaining is Sheriff Braden Marley. She’s been angling for a shot at the gentle giant’s heart—and the rest of him—for a long time. Except he not only holds her at a maddening arm’s length, he somehow manages to keep other men away, too.

Enter Jamie Powell, a human marine archeologist who’s in town for a cataloging project. His instant chemistry with Chelsea inspires her to try a sexy new tactic: make Braden jealous enough to stop dragging his feet and start leaving his shoes under her bed.

The ensuing storm generates a boatload of complications none of them saw coming. A forbidden attraction no amount of merfolk magic can erase. And the danger that their secrets could be exposed to the outside world…

Product Warnings
Seductive shimmering lights, a sexy interlude on the strip club floor, mysterious Spanish lovers, and a trio caught in an eddy of intense sexual attraction. Swim at your own risk.

My Review: I read Tidal Wave and WHIRPOOL back-to-back and that wasn’t a punishment at al. After closing Tidal Wave I couldn’t get back to Jaffrey’s Cove fast enough and this time I met Chelsea, Braden and Jamie. Jamie Powell is in Jaffrey’s Cove for an assessment on Blain Colten’s diving collection where he meets Braden and Chelsea who both are merfolk. The magnetic pull between these three people is instant, yet on various levels, and demands a further exploration. Only Jamie’s curiosity and an accident cause the revealing of secrets the merfolk like to keep under wraps.

I have to say that Vivian Arend nailed it again in the likable and vibrant characters. The cast isn’t extensive but within a novella length story I do not mind it when the focus lies mainly on the lead characters with very few, equally well drawn, supportive friends and family. The story really revolves around the trio, starting with Jamie, who is as focused as he is forgetful at times. His inquisitive nature expands to his sexy side as well, creating not only a delicious friction between him and Chelsea but also between him and Braden. Now Braden is a big hulk of a man, fierce, vigorous, loves to lead, but with a sensitive side as well. He had his eye on Chelsea for a while now but he wants to do the right thing by her. Chelsea is humorous, vivacious and a sultry woman who is not afraid to step in to the unknown. She has one dream; go to college, get her degree and see the world. Braden has in no way the intention to disrupt that dream but circumstances keep Chelsea in Jaffrey’s Cove, allowing these three characters to meet.

There were two minor issues that arose for me during the romantic development of this triangle. One was the fact that Braden wanted to keep his distance of Chelsea because he knows of her desire to go to college. Still there is a sudden turnaround in his restrain towards her that gave me pause in wondering where that instant change came from. Second was the reason behind Chelsea, Braden and Jamie’s first lovemaking that initially did not sit well with me. Of course that was until I read through the scene and ended up with the character in “the morning after” moment and I could only cheer for Jamie. Vivian Arend solved that situation rather adequately for me.

I loved how there were atmospheric under the sea scenes next to the geeky moments of Jamie in assessing worth and origin of various objects. Or how Braden goes all protective yet Chelsea challenges both men to do and want it all with each other. The banter between the three is at times funny, emotion fraught or downright sexy and only signals the incredible attraction humming between them, which I think is another strong point in this authors writing voice. There were some struggles between them which kept the evolving relationship interesting but again the erotic scenes conjured by Vivian Arend’s writing is full blown sensuous and playful. Of course in WHIRPOOL I get an extra bonus in the form of some m/m action between Jamie and Braden, it’s naturally developing, lighthearted of tone but nonetheless very erotic enhancing in some scenes.

The growing love is what drives this story but a small plot also functions smoothly within the erotic romance realizing a rounded story with a beautiful, unique and satisfying ending. Again I’m surprised at how I savored the magic of the merfolk, the spicy eroticism, and the vivid dialogues between these three characters. I didn’t need more, I didn’t want more and I have to applaud Vivian Arend for that because I seem to be a gluttonous reader at times, always wanting more. Add a writing style that speaks of a wonderful, creative and oh so wicked imagination that allows me to close this novella with a deep content sigh.

With WHIRPOOL Vivian Arend writes naughty smut the way naughty smut is intended; romantic, erotic and with a touch of humor.

4 stars

Quote Braden:
He released Jamie, draping his arms more gently around his torso. Jamie didn’t try to escape. In fact, he leaned back into Braden and Chelsea’s mouth watered at the sight of the two of them. Long and lean, muscular and handsome. An enticing combination for any woman.
Her men.

A little help wanted with my birthday wishlist

I have mentioned it before but on August 23rd it is my birthday and I've got a birthday partay coming up with the ROOB posse. Besides the hilarious fun we have and the mile-a-minute conversations we always give each other books...lots of books. So Yesterday my sis, Natascha said: Do you have your wishlist ready? Me: Erm, no *eek* So I've got five books I desperately want because they sounds so good and then I'm drawing blank...

Me...book-addict of the first order, draws a blank on what to add more. My sis wants at least 12-15 titles and I come up wit five titles. I am ashamed for myself. So here I come to you, my fellow book-addicts with TBR piles of ginormous proportions. Can you help a book gal out here and shout out some of the most awesome titles you've read lately? It would be most apreciated :)

Oh, here are my five books I just can't wait to receive:

I'm off to check the wishlist I have at BookDepo but I'm a pre-order junkie there and have little hope to find a lot more - oh gawd, does that sound A: Desperate, B: Spoiled or C: A case of gluttonous book buying behavior?

Slippery when wet…

Forces of Nature, Book 1

From her first kiss to her first sight of dolphins dancing on the waves, Alexia Colten has always held a special place in her heart for Jaffrey’s Cove. Now that she’s back to help her grandmother settle into a home, she discovers this place has lost none of its remembered magic. In fact, it seems more magical than before—and more erotic.

After she’s gifted with a beautiful, dolphin-etched medallion, she finds herself surrounded by the golden boys of summers past. Her body is filled with longings she can’t explain and dreams of blue lights that turn into lovers.

Joshua Marley and his cousin Anthony are merfolk, a people capable of living beneath the waves as either dolphin or human. Alexia holds the medallion that marks her as the next in line to lead their people—if she can prove she can transform. Working in tandem, they’re sure they can arouse her passion and protect her from those who would use her simply to gain power.

But their strength alone may not be enough to help her face the challenge of her new position…

Warning: This title contains a conniving granny, naked men in the surf and shifters who take fun in the water to new depths. Snorkels not required.

My Review: Sometimes you stumble on to a novella that gives you such a pleasurable reading time you finish within the blink of an eye. The set-up: You take a small town near the sea and one high-spirited woman who spend many summers in that small town near the sea. One Grams with a secret to reveal and a harem of hunk-a-liscious men suddenly all too aware of the high-spirited woman. This all juiced up with the imagination of one wicked author and I just tore through this novella like a crack in sight of her next fix.

The story told is pretty basic and if I didn’t have such a great time with various aspects in this novella it would probably have been a 3 star read for me. Still, Vivian Arend has some wonderful writing skills up her sleeve with a town you can’t help but love on sight. Characters who I wanted to befriend, men who I instantly wanted to get hot and heavy with, and the smut in this book is so spine-tingling good my toes where permanently in curled position. Oh, and let’s not forget the merfolk, I want one of my own to play and swim with in the big blue ocean.

Three characters play the leading role in a ménage a trios, which is coincidentally a theme I never can get enough of. Alexia is an independent, yet compassionate woman tricked by her Grams to come help her with her home in Jaffrey’s Cove. There she meets Joshua who is kind of the black sheep in the family, or so it feels, and an impulsive, passionate artist. The third in this threesome is Anthony who is a teacher and though he has a sensitive, somewhat nurturing side there are some hidden depths in his preferences that pleasantly surprised me. Together they create a sensual chemistry that is blazing through the pages and kept me in a constant state of smut bliss with their arousal. These three characters interconnected on all the important levels for not only the passion to work, but also the romance.

Between the moment of attraction and the romantic conclusion lies a period of a week and in all honesty is of course very fast. Nevertheless, it doesn’t diminish the sincerity and depth of emotions coursing through Alexia, Joshua and Anthony’s heart. Of course there is a reason for their ménage but it is so much more fun for you all to find that out for yourself! The secret Grams has, who is a hilarious secondary character, pulls a 180 on Alexia’s life and now she has to deal with much more than just her Grams. This novella immediately brought me to Jaffrey’s Cove and I spend such a wonderful time there, getting to know characters I would love to meet again. Vivian Arend’s writing style is uncomplicated yet flowing and very seductive or humorous when it needs to be. She turned me in to a reader gobbling up this story like my favorite dessert and in closing TIDAL WAVE I was so very glad I had Whirlpool already on my e-reader.

TIDAL WAVE is charged with a spicy and sensuous romance, humor that got me from smiling to laughing and characters who leaped of the pages. I want more of what Vivian Arend has got to give!

4 stars

Quote Alexia:
“I’ve fallen into a fairy tale but no one is following their proper lines. ‘Your world is not what you think it is, Alexia, but I’m sure you’ll be fine with us ordering you around.’” She rubbed a hand over her neck, glaring at them. “My Gram is a manipulating tyrant, my lawyer date tried to force himself on me, and my dream lover is a liar. Of all of you, Anthony is the only one behaving like the gentle person I remember.”

The misschief of July...

July has been a crazy month for me but in the best of ways. Let me count those ways for you…

First of all I just concluded my 12 days of Smutty Researchers At Play feature and I am baffled at how many new peeps I got to know and what fun there was to be had. I researched some things too and “discovered” new-to-me authors. Kitty Thomas with Comfort Food has niggled its way in to my top 20 of 2010. Also when I wanted to read a new M/M author I stumbled on to info about the Special Forces series by Marquesate & Vashtan…Dan & Vadim immortalized themselves with their first part in Soldiers. I was blown away with their story!

Hereby I want to give a standing ovation for some incredible bloggers who participated in the Smutty Researchers At Play feature: Kris from Kris ‘N’ Good Books – Cecile from All I Want And More – Janna from Erotromreader – KC from Smokinhotbooks and @Ferishia from twitter. You guys are the best and thank you for your time and presence on my blog, you made it all the more awesome!

July was also the month I met DEXTER. Now I heard a few peeps going on about Dexter on twitter and the name stuck with me so when I had the chance to get my hands on all four seasons I didn’t hesitate and two weeks ago I received them. Okay, I had to say I had to get used to Dexter but after an epi or two I was hooked like…well, I was just hooked. This evening I watched the fourth season’s finale and OMG; What? Where? What? How? Who? I needs details ladies and ASAP. Season five already in progress somewhere in the world? I wants to bribe with virtual man-candy, chocolate, anything, just so I can get some DEXTER intell!

Now I’ve got some top secret news to share…I don’t know if the visual treats are already released by Maya Banks but I received some promo stuff and you didn’t hear it here or from me but keep an eye out for; NO PLACE TO RUN. All my hussy instincts are on sharp with that one!

Just verified it and the secret is out…I gets to share YAY This is what I found in the excerpt booklet from Banks’ KGI series:

Next to all the wonderful blogstuff going on I had an real life meeting with blogger Janna and I found a gal to talk all (m/m) smutty stuff with. At the beginning of this year we wondered if we would do a ‘You’ve Got Mail – Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks meeting’. Well, we got to know each other a bit and it was suddenly a ‘for sure’ thing we had to meet. On July 30th it was time, Janna and I hooked up at a grand central station and there were no awkward moments, we started talking and we did so non-stop for seven hours.*We were such book-addicts in the city* It was good we kept the vocal cords smooth with lots of drinking or else I wouldn’t have much voice left LOL We talked about so much, of course real life stuff, books we love, and also about blogging. Now in this Janna pointed me towards something I’ve been thinking about for two months. My blog increased on the smut, the quotes have become more erotic, the pictures of Black Wade are one of my most visited pages (says google analytics)and though I have warnings on my left sidebar I was wondering if I shouldn’t check the box in blog settings for the warning page before entering my blog. I fear it will keep peeps away before even entering my blog but on the other hand, if first time visitors don’t want to be confronted with adult content, this is a fair way to warn them. So as of this week you’ll find yourself warned before entering my realm :)

This month is also the month where I’ve written a few guest blog posts and I’ll be visiting KC & K-Khan at Smokinhotbooks and Janna at Erotromreader in the next few weeks.

Go check out there places what wicked fun they have planned and what giveaways you can take a shot at :0

Well, that were the stats for me this month. August is going to be the month of my b-day and I’ll turn *whispers* 34 o_0 I’m currently having a very relaxed vacay with hubby and will spend some time on preparing myself for a busy September.

Is everyone enjoying the summer? Today I'll be spending some quality time in real life with Pearl YAY. We have some serious catching up to do and it feels like forever since the last time we talked. Hubby would roll his eyes at my statement saying I spoke to Pearl on the phone for 5 hours like 2 weeks ago ROFL
