Stuck between a rock-solid man and a hard place…

Xtreme Adventures, Book Two

Melanie Dixon’s body may have recovered from a horrific climbing accident, but her nerve is long gone. So is the natural enthusiasm for life she took for granted. Tired of being scared, beyond ready to conquer her fears, she pulls up stakes and moves to her brother’s new hometown to start over. Her first step is the most terrifying—to tackle the wall at the local climbing center.

Derrick James is mesmerized by Melanie’s dark beauty, and equally impressed with her climbing abilities and determination. Watching her retune rusty skills spurs a desire to partner with her—on and off the ropes. Melanie’s a compelling mix of wit, sensuality and vulnerability, and it’s his delicious task to convince her the scars on her body are no match for the heat rising between them.

Then a man from Melanie’s past shows up, pushing their relationship to the edge. Nathan King wants photographs for a “where are they now” series, but his side agenda is more personal in nature. A proposal that brings her out of her sensual shell and onto a precarious sexual ledge. Where trust is crucial…and too easily shattered.

Warning: This book may cause heart-pounding, body-shaking adrenaline attacks—and that’s before they leave the climbing gym. Contains blindfolds, ropes and a healthy dose of voyeurism. Go on—you know you like to watch.

My Review

With Rising, Freestyle I was quickly wrapped up again in Vivian Arend’s ability to light a match to a combustible chemistry between two going on three characters. Derrick and Melanie hit it off from the get go but this time I was quickly ensnared by the trauma Melanie had to endure in the past. The story begins where Melanie is at a point in her life she wants to take back the reigns, she wants to climb again and she does this with the help of Derrick. With the stage set, circumstances revealed and a chemistry sizzling up a small storm between Melanie and Derrick while climbing a wall, I was very interested to see where this story would go.

Derrick James is charming, caring and virile specimen of the male gender. He is the kind of guy who immediately appeals to me because of how he both challenges and cares for his woman. Melanie is the center of the story with her trials and tribulations. The rock climbing, the chills of fear but also Melanie who is blossoming in to a confidant woman is something that was well portrayed. I accompanied her in every trial and tribulation which made me choke up one moment and reach for some ice cubes the next. The hunger Derrick feels for Melanie, voiced by Vivian Arend's writing style powered not only toe curling moments but also powerful emotions! Yet it is when Nathan King entered the stage where thing got even more interesting. His request and the situation developing from that is titillating to say the least. Also, I like it that Derrick and Nathan have a passionate but completely different role to fulfill, yet are equally focused on Melanie.

There were two factors in Rising, Freestyle that added a punch to the story. One was the fact Melanie was dealing with the emotional trauma of her accident and the fact her body had changed due to it. This storyline added depth to the developing romance I missed to some extend in the previous book. The second factor was Nathan King. He added a pizzazz, a flavor to the story without becoming an overbearing presence. That is the true role of a secondary character to me. He enhanced the personal and romantic development of the main characters, he amped up on the sexual heat and by the end Nathan was screaming for his own story.

The extra where every chapters began with the explanation of climbing slang added to the vibe of the story and at the same time I picked up on a few new things. Who knew Rope Gun was slang title for the climber who does all the leading? Or that a Crux is the hardest move on a route? I didn’t!! I like this attention to small details and show either the knowledge or research from the author.

Rising, Freestyle is a fantastic summer read full of lively characters, spine tingling sexual tension, humor and a good dose of emotions. It all worked like a charm!!

4 stars

Quote for you to sample:

She had to be the most emotionally volatile woman he’d met in a long time. Frightening thought in some ways, but he liked his woman to have both the fire to stand up to him, and the mental strength to submit.

  2. I appreciated your review so much -- I read the first book in this series after going through her Granite Lake Wolves series, and it just seemed so very different and I just couldn't seem to connect with it very well. This review causes me to review that response and perhaps re-think my decision not to read anymore of this series. Thanks for causing me to think. Always a good place to be, eh?
