Cooking With The Characters: Pastry chef Livvy

I am thrilled to have Livvy over because Sweet As Sin is the story which gave me the inspiration for this feature. There is a scene in the Sugar Shack that involves sexy times in the kitchen with various ingredients. The names Livvy gives her pastries apeal to all my senses! I'm handing over the floor to her for some sumtious cooking time ;)

The Sugar Shack operated at full speed, the break-neck pace of the crew inspiring as they scrambled to fill a rush order for a restaurant open house. Livvy paused to blot the sweat from her forehead and blews out a satisfied breath. Things were looking so good in her life. Not only had her business picked up thanks to the Dark Craving line but her life with John was better than she could’ve imagined. A quick glance at the clock made her smile. In just a few hours, she’d close up shop and head home to his arms.

A baby-faced culinary student scurried over. “Mrs. Murphy, I refilled the racks. There wasn’t any more peach marmalade until the delivery Friday so I used raspberry preserves. I hope that is okay.”

“Yes, Kim. Sometimes you have to adapt with what you have. Did you zest them up first?”
The student’s grin widened. “Yes ma’am. I used some blueberry schnapps to thin the mix. The flavor was really incredible. I might have to try that on toast.”

Livvy laughed. “Good girl. Come on, I’ll show you my recipe for the Double Chocolate Chip Stud Muffins.”

“Oh, those are your best seller, aren’t they?”

“Yep, right after the Chocolate Orgasm.” Livvy said pulling out ingredients. “But I have a confession. We’ve been making these muffins so long, I just kind of eyeball it now. So remember that. You may have to adjust things a bit when you’re doing this tomorrow by yourself.”

“Tomorrow?” The young woman gulped. “Me?”

“Yes, you. These are easy. You’ll do fine.”

Kim barely blinked as Livvy sifted and folded, mixed and measured. “Why do you use solid dark chocolate in the center? I’d think milk chocolate or fudge would creamier.”

A small smile lifted Livvy’s lips. “Because chocolate is like love. You can never have too much of it but sometimes, you need the dark so you can appreciate the sweetness. And not everything is smooth. You have to have something to sink your teeth into.”

Her student nodded absently, still watching the bowl. She was too young to appreciate the complexities of textures in baking or in life. Livvy slid the tray in the oven and glanced once more at the clock. Soon she’d head home to her new husband. She made a mental note to take home a couple muffins. Of all people, John would appreciate the dark and the light.

SUGAR SHACK DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHIP STUD MUFFINS
(all measurements are approximate)
1 cup butter
¾ cup sugar
4-5 eggs
1 cup plus one tablespoon bread flour
1 ½ tablespoon baking powder
¼ cup milk
½ cup chocolate chips
¾ cup powdered cocoa
20 squares of dark chocolate, 70% cocoa solids

1. Cream together the butter and sugar with a wooden spoon until white and fluffy.

2. Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well, and whisk for 5 minutes.

3. Sift the flour and baking powder, add to the butter mixture and fold until well-blended.

4. Add in the milk and the cocoa and mix for 1 minute. Fold in the chocolate chips.

5. Refrigerate the mixture for 2 hours.

6. Preheat the oven to 400°F.

7. Line muffin pans with paper liners, making 20 muffins.

8. Put a teaspoon of the muffin mixture in each case. Add a square of chocolate, then top with another teaspoon and a half of the muffin mixture.

9. Bake the muffins for 15-20 minutes until cooked through and risen. Top with more chocolate chips 2 minutes before removing from oven. Serve warm from the oven.

  2. I've just read Turn It Up and loved it! I have to read the rest of her books now. This one sounds great, too.
    I can't really choose my most sinful dessert because I love most desserts. I've got a real sweet tooth! :) Because of the many fruits in our at the moment I love all kinds of crumbles. Just made blackberry crumble and it was delicious.

    OMG what are you doing to me, I'm on this very low carb diet and now you bring on these.... I kinda always thought I was strong but dayam I have to be bound to my chair not to try these chocolate chip stud muffins... I promise myself, when I lost another 10 kg I'm making myself a batch of these. Are they magical? When I make these does a male stud-muffin come out to taste them with me I wonder...

    I haven't come across sweet as sin yet but it's definitely going on my wish-list!!!

    Hmmm my favorite desert... I have tasted this deliscious Baileys Coffee Cream Pie once and it is to die for, so either that or Barlow's Bannoffee Pie!

    My favorite dessert is the Molten Chocolate Cake at Chilli's Restaurant. Hot cake and chocolate sauce over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Truly decadent.
